The 2024 Volvo V60 T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered plug-in hybrid finally has the motive force to outrun its past. The final gas-only V60 Polestar remained faster than its sharply styled replacement, but a host of under-the-skin upgrades changes that. The V60 Polestar's battery has grown its usable capacity from 9.1 to 14.9 kilowatt-hours.

That provides a major boost to the wagon's electric range; in our hands, the battery gave us 44 miles of EV operation in our 75-mph highway test.

The electric motor, which powers the rear axle, works in conjunction with a boosted 2.0-liter inline-four, which is now just turbocharged instead of turbo- and supercharged.

Total output is 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque, improvements of 40 and 29, respectively, over its smaller-battery predecessor with the turbo- and supercharged engine.

The V60 has a small 3.7-kW onboard charger, which means a battery refill using 240V Level 2 equipment will require at least five hours.

On our 200-mile highway test loop, the V60 Polestar averaged 34 mpg on gasoline after the electricity ran out, besting the previous model's 31-mpg result.

With everything working together, the V60 Polestar reaches 60 mph in an impressive 4.1 seconds, which is 0.1 second quicker than the 2017 V60 Polestar.

The suspension is adjustable but only through manual tuning knobs located at each corner.

The V60 Polestar is an expensive proposition, asking $72,345 to start.
